Men Picking Up The Gauntlets 3!!!

As a gender advocate, I have had people ask me what about advocating for men. They ask: “Isn’t gender equality all about gender balance? Why am I always throwing the spotlight on women or highlighting women’s issues.” I smile and tell them that I speak about girl child and women issues because I have first-hand experience of a lot of the things I talk about. As a woman, I know what it means to live in a patriarchal society. I know to a large extent, the power those stereotypes can wield over people’s perceptions. That is why I am fighting really hard to change them in our girls’/women’s minds and…

    MEN PICKING UP THE GAUNTLETS!!!

I started advocacy because of my experiences as a young lady. I believed that it would inspire young girls and help them choose to rise above the discrimination and inequality that they were facing from society. Some people, especially some men, belittle efforts of women by saying that all gender advocates do is focus on girls while leaving out boys. I know that I am not very good at male advocacy because it’s not my strong forte – not because I wouldn’t have the right words to say but because I don’t fully understand or live their reality as well as a man would. I suggest that this talk that…

    HAPPY INTERNATIONAL MEN’S DAY

19th November was marked as International Men’s Day and I want to use this platform and opportunity to specially thank and appreciate all the men in my life. From time immemorial, I have had men who have contributed positively to my growth, progress and my success. My father, my twin brother, my uncles, my primary and secondary school teachers, my lecturers, my pastors, my project supervisors, my friends, my colleagues, my co-workers, my mentors, my bosses and my role models. These have at one point or another contributed to my success by inspiring me to work hard, dream and be the best that I can be in all my endeavors.…

    Teach Him Too!!!

It is a Thursday evening. The day for brothers and sisters forums. Samuel and Grace, a brother and sister seeing each other live around the same area so they often prepare and leave together for the forum every week. Taking the cab to church together helps them save transport fares. Then, they can spend their spare money on a snack on their way home or buy whatever else they want.  At church, however, they part. Samuel goes round to the back of the main auditorium while Grace walks into one of the halls in the building. The brothers’ and sisters’ forums hold their meetings in separate halls. The brothers prefer…

THE ROLE OF EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS IN RAISING UNSCRIPTED AND UNSTOPPABLE GIRLS

“Candidate 34 has been disqualified. The elections would have to be rescheduled.” Regina could not believe her ears. Just as she was about to be declared winner of the faculty presidential election, she was disqualified! What had she done wrong? Murmurings arose from among the voters, supporters and everyone around. Everyone was just as bewildered and perplexed as she was. The only person with a smirk on his face was Prince, her closest rival.  She followed the presiding officer out of the hall.  “Surely there has been some mistake, sir,” she said, huffing and puffing and trying so hard to catch up with his extra long strides.  “No mistake Regina.…

    ”FOOT YOUR BILL MY FOOT”

Growing up in Nigeria, I have heard many men I know often complain about how society is hard on them as regards being responsible and having enough money to cater for themselves and others also. They also complain about how many women feel entitled to their wealth and money even when they barely know them. For instance, a guy asks for a girl’s number and the girl already sees him as potential lunches, dinners, credit alerts and airtime even when she’s clearly seeing someone. Sometimes, even just casual friends expect their male friends to buy gifts, help them pay for stuff and so on as though they’re entitled to it. …

    WILLIAM AND RITA

PREPARING MEN FOR EMPOWERED WOMEN William and Rita have been married for three years. William has been comfortable with being the breadwinner while Rita stays home and does the chores. Rita has always wanted to further her studies and join the workforce. After the birth and the weaning of their second baby boy, she asked for William’s permission to return to school. He blatantly refused noting that she has no need for more education. He was able to provide everything they needed as a family since he was the man – the head of the house. As the days went by, William started to become irritated and restless. He would…

Assumptions and Facts; Are men really smarter than women?

It is widely known that certain genders are more likely to find themselves employed in certain jobs- for example, a woman is more likely to be a teacher or nurse and men are more likely to be a Civil Engineer. This is generally believed to be as a result of differences in intelligence levels between the genders with men generally seen and considered as smarter than women. While the reflection of this dichotomy is clearly evident in the workplace and backed by hard employment data, it is imperative to also ponder if the former assertion is truly an effect of the latter- is the difference in intelligence among the sexes…
