Today is the International Day of the Girl Child. Phew! Like the Yoruba people say to express their excitement, if you were to ride a horse in me, you wouldn’t stumble.
Why?
I know from today onwards; a number of girls out there will start taking ownership of their lives. Now, let us come to the theme of this year which is Girl-force; Unscripted and Unstoppable.
How should you be unscripted?
On this path, you have been told that you have to live your life according to a particular script, which is tailored toward someone else’s dictates, because you are a girl. You have been told to shrink yourself and conform to societal expectations because you are a girl. The society expects you to act out a script, whether you find happiness or otherwise. It is a script riddled with roles that depict relegation, limitation and repeated setbacks.
You are expected to be the actress of this supposed societal script and you are expected to play scenes that limit you. You are expected to act out dialogue of ‘I can’t’, ‘A girl should not’, ‘Mellow down, you are too ambitious for a lady’’.
Well, I vehemently disagree with everyone who seeks to clip your wings. And I vehemently tell you, never succumb to this societal script, do not live according to the script written and subsequently passed down by the gatekeepers of tradition.
Re-write your script and re-define who you are. Be the best and do more. Change the narrative, change the discourse. Change their horizon and scope. Change their mental misconceptions.
Baby-girl, you should believe and accept that unstoppable you are. Never listen to the voices in your head or the ones that stare you in the face, telling you that you should encumber yourself or constrain your own expectations.
Let their limiting words drive you to own your life, do more to soar higher than their expectations. You are unstoppable. Now and always!
I want to see a generation better than mine, a generation of unscripted and unstoppable girls. Do not get me wrong. I love culture, it is invaluable inseparable from who we are, from what we will always be. But hey, culture do no limit me as a girl rather yield to my desires!
