SUBMISSIONS FOR INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE GIRL CHILD

It is still October, a month dedicated to celebrate the girl child all around the world. During the International Day of the girl child, prizes were given to girls who wrote poems and short stories. The theme for the poetry competition was ‘I am a girl’. This was borne out of the thought of what girls really think about themselves likewise the short story competition was on ‘My Dream Girl’ which made them think on how they want girls to be seen in years to come, the changes they would like to see and stereotypes they would want to see changing. There are interesting poetry submissions below.

I am Nikita

I am strong

Even on the roughest of roads

I carry the xx factor like a shield

It is the reason I am unconquerable

I have a strength that more than meet the eyes.

I can withstand the greatest pains

And you dare call me weak

You call me the weaker vessel.

Yes!  I am a vessel but not weak

For if I am weak, shall I bring forth a child

For the minute I am weak the world comes to an end.

I am a girl

One of the best creation of God

You don’t see beyond my looks.

You call me inadequate because,

I don’t appeal to your sexual sense

A message to the world I live

Behold! The beauty of my intellect

The beauty of my heart.

The model of progress

And to you I am just a girl

In your sight your greatest mistake

In your sight a deficiency of your organ

But before your scorn I shall grow

In the midst of men, I shall flourish

For I am meant to lead legions of men

While you wait there saying,

She is just a girl

I will take my stand in the world

Their eyes piercing through me

Expecting my intellectual flaw,  Because I am a girl

But like the Northern star,

I shine

I shock them with the magnitude of my knowledge

I tell them the reason I am created. To protect mankind

To give importance to the existence of man

So listen, ye, who breathe

I am here because I am a girl

And I don’t regret that fact.

Nikita is the Greek

It means the unconquerable

TOPIC:                                             I AM A GIRL

I am a girl, with unique properties,

varying mood, sometimes sad ,sometimes happy,

but patience, love, care and kindness are my merits.

I am a girl, a pride to God in the society,

the sweetest of all creatures

made with decorative fixtures.

A reason for my father’s worry

hoping for love and care

a helper to my mother and companion to brothers

a diamond, a jewel of inestimable value

infact! I am irresistible.

I am a girl, of great vision

that studies to fight frustration, avoid destitution,

win independence and find inspiration.

I am a girl with qualities and potentials that intimidate many

I am bold, bright and beautiful.

I am extraordinary, am not a nothing, but

I am a girl!
